INNSAEI

An ancient Icelandic term for intuition as well as “the sea within”. The borderless nature of our inner mind, a world of ubiquitous existence that is beyond our conscious rationality. Through this project, I explore the intuitive, instinctual, and subconscious method of art, which is ultimately expressed through the process of illustration, materiality, and “away-from-body” designs.

I rely on my subconscious to guide the lines which form the structure, silhouette, and emotions in my designss. By staying away from traditional methods of fashion illustration, I want to explore the raw, unedited thoughts within the mind and discover what truly motivates the purpose behind my art. These illustrations may be interpreted differently by viewers, and I invite the viewers to experience, not a complete design, but an empathy towards my train of thought. I view these drawings as a symbol of the infinite world of imagination unbound to our rationality. Throughout the process, I find myself becoming lenient towards the element of sand, dots, slashing and roughness, as an appreciation of transience and imperfection. Akin to the repeated symbolism in surrealist art, these slashes allude to Insaeii, “the sea within”, as an opening in emptiness, an invitation to the mind.

I allow myself to forget the natural contours of a human form, and begin building an extension of what may be our body, mind, and soul.
